Spicy ‘Nanas Shooter

The Spicy 'Nana's is a fireball meetings the yellow runt banana, great 1 cent candy store shot. There is some back end alcohol action which is common with anything utilizing 99 bananas, but the flavor does seem like it could be some mix of a Willy Wonka recipe if Wonka used a neutral grain spirit to infuse his candy.

We taste test Rutter and Flaughter, two scotch whisky labels that include a stepped approach to peat. Flaughter has a 14.8 PPM while Rutter has a 11 PPM (less peat/smoky flavor), but do the steps make that big a difference? We find out. You can find these bottles for roughly USD $85 per 750ml bottle. Pronounced "a-nock", the AnCnoc Scotch is Gaelic for Knock Hill, home to the distillery Knockdhu.

Today we review and taste a new product coming to the market, Auchentoshan American Oak, which retails for $39.99 a bottle. Our thoughts put the "American Oak" branding as a great starter scotch for those looking to get their feet wet, sweet enough to turn on the bourbon drinker yet unique scotch enough to make you feel like a Scotsman. Plus, at the USD $39.99 price tag, it's easily affordable as an introduction Scotch.

At the end of the day, you've got a slow sipping light-to-medium weight blended scotch that will present a bit more Isley notes than deep oak that you may get from some of its competitors. Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition makes its earlier releases seem a bit boring by comparison and will no doubt mix well in a cocktail as well as a sipper.

Two words: peppermint. Yep, pepper-mint. That's the big deal in this tasting profile; maybe there is some ginger ale flavor, if you try hard enough.

Definitely something to try before you buy for those unsure of a peat profile, but don't let that hold you back from giving it a go!

A solid blended malt scotch, nice medium to satin mouthfeel, a hint of smoke and peat with a sweet malt consistency

Forty Creek brings some nice sweet and spicy notes right in the nose (aroma) that follow through with the sip. Almost a honey/maple syrup like attack and lingering finish along with a full smooth experience from start to stop that's not overly dominated by oak yet not too sweet.
